The Kitchen Island
What a week! I was helping my friend in Lewes England with her kitchen renovation, while I was there our rabbit Gustav passed away. I came home to an empty hutch and an upset husband. So I missed out on two posts this week. But onwards …
As promised, in a previous post about the kitchen, I’m going to show you the kitchen island today.
As there wasn’t much space left in the kitchen and as we didn’t want to eat in the kitchen I wanted something small but useful. I didn’t wanted it to be open as I needed the storage, so I went on a bit of a search. Chest of drawers were all too low so I searched for French commodes as they are always about 100 cm high which is perfect for a kitchen island and I found one. It’s not perfect, it’s antique and wobbly but I kind of like that as it is in contrast to the kitchen units which are all shiny new.
We took the top off and replaced it with composite and added a few fun brackets to extend the surface. Composite is a perfect alternative to marble as it doesn’t stain like marble does. I use the island to bake on and prep food on so It’s probably the most used surface in the kitchen. I can easily wipe it off with a wet cloth, I love it
The island has been Shadow White (the colour on the window trim) but that was too cold, Parma Grey but that was too Frozen (!), Sudbury Yellow but that was too sunny and too dominant and now it’s Setting Plaster, obviously pink.
I used the same hardware to match the rest of the kitchen and there’s a “Truffel hinge” on the door as she kept opening the door to just sit in the cupboard. She loves being in the kitchen.
So what do we keep inside?
There is the obvious “shit drawer”, all kitchens need one. I didn’t edited our shit drawer for this image, it is what it is. Cat treats, vitamins, chargers, empty batteries for recycling etc.
We store cat food and tea behind the doors. There are potatoes, onions and garlic in the baskets on the right. A Brabantia bread bin for bread and cakes.
The jug is from Falcon Enamelware and the last dahlias from the garden.
Love, Yves xxx
