Footstool Slipcover Tutorial

This is just a basic way to make a simple slipcover for the base of a footstool. I promise to write a tutorial on how to make a pillow with piping soon. It's all very time consuming so I hope you are happy with just this one for starters.

1. Get your gear ready

You'll need:

  • fabric
  • pins, lots of them
  • scissors

2. Cover the top with fabric first

Put some fabric on top of the footstool, make sure you leave some space for the hems. Tip: ripping is in upholstery world so much better than cutting. If you rip your fabric you're always straight and it's faster this way. Not all fabric is for ripping but most cottons do the trick!!

3. Start to pin up!

Pin all the pieces together with the wrong way of the fabric on the outside. You basically make a little box of the fabric pieces with a:

  • top piece
  • left piece
  • right piece
  • back piece
  • front piece

Make sure that your left, right, back and front pieces are longer because you'll need to hem them to a perfect length but you'll do that at the end. My motto; better too much as to little!!

Something like this:

4. When all the pinning is done

You'll need to sew all the pinned pieces together. Just leave the pins where they are and pull each one out after you stitched to the other one. This way you'll replace your pins with stitches and you're slipcover will fit perfectly.

5. Almost there!!

Turn your slipcover inside out (the good side of the fabric) and pull over your footstool. Now hem with pins the exact length (the way you like it) pull off and stitch your hems. That's it!!
