Yesterday Bo and I went to Anki and Casper and we played in the snow, like most people in western Europe did. It always amaze me that people seem to really complain about cold and wet weather as if we live in a tropical sun swept climate the rest of the year. There should be snow in January because it's January.
Alistair Appleton wrote something so funny, and true, about the subject:
"Perhaps it also explains British people's absurd misery over the rain. As if in any other year it didn't rain in England. As if Britain was a tropical island maliciously haunted by a temperate rain God that taunted us. Why are we always surprised and cross that it's raining? It's like being cross because it gets dark at night, or because we only have two hands not eight."
On our way back to Anki and Casper's home we saw something amazing, something Bo and I are going to look at today. I'll get back to this as it's too exciting but probably a little too good to be true. Will tell you all about that an other day.
Enjoy the snow xox |
Hallo!
Just found your blog and I'll defintely pop in here now and then. Totally agree on your view of the weather complaints. I live in the very south of Sweden and it is windy and rainy but hey it's like that along the coast. Okey, I use to wind(complain) about the wind(stormy weather) because I moved to a more wind exposed place. However the laundry gets dry!
Today I filled up the birds' winter food. Beautiful to watch the little guys feasting and singing.
I'm sorry about your hen. So sad! Life and death I guess but one never gets used to it. Do you live in a village? How does it work with hens? Curious:)
See you again & Have a good day!
Looks nice! No snow here, unfortunately.
I agree about the weather comments, it seems to be the same everywhere (here in France too), but I have to say that I just can't wait to see what is this so surprising thing Bo & you found?!... Ok, now you've said this, we wanna know!
Hahah, this is so true! I like this weather. A little less now because we were moving and everything gets more difficult but finally seeing people iceskating on the canals, for the first time in my life after growing up in a different country, made my day.
Hallo Yvonne!
Groetjes Petra,
England is very grey, we don't just get rain and cold, we get very grey weather. I lived in France for 4 years, and their winters are colder and harsher but nowhere near as grey. It is a very British thing to moan about the weather, but I do think as countries go, our climate kinda sucks.
We have clear seasonal changes, but they are very unpredictable. Compare this to most places that have 4 very clear seasonal changes, but you can bet most don't get days on end of rain in the high summer.... There are not many countries that have such changeable weather... it is because we are a small island and our location georgraphically, our climate is quite unusual compared to even our close neighbours!
You can read more about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_the_United_Kingdom
Perhaps now you will understand why us brits grumble alot! Also, comparing it to knowing that nightime will be dark is a poor analogy, we DON'T KNOW what our weather is going to be like, so it's not something that becomes routine or habit...
Haha, as an English girl reading about the way we complain about the rain really made me chuckle, it's so true..... although I just so happen to LOVE the rain :0) Enjoy the snow x
Beautiful pictures! Here in Atlanta, US we are having a very mild winter! My kids are are hoping for a little snow! :(
Same here :) I'm Australian, and here in Australia water is always a big topic of conversation. Either we are not getting enough or we are getting too much. In late 2010 / early 2011 we finished off a decade-long drought with the worst flooding in 37 years and the most severe cyclone to ever make landfall - all in Queensland, the state where I live. Again over the last couple of weeks we've had more flooding. It's awful and it's so very, very sad - but a lot of Australians tend to forget the fact that life is like that in Australia. Where I live we spend the majority of the year blanketed in hot and humid weather. People complain about it all the time. We have an extremely short and mild winter compared to yours. It never snows and we usually have to only spend 3 months wearing long sleeves on our arms during the day, and still in winter we complain about the cold too. I love this country of mine though, no matter what Mother Nature throws at us. I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Yvonne I must say that I absolutely adore your blog and have done so for years. I love reading about your renovations and seeing the beautiful pictures of yours and Bo's handiwork. I love your use of colour in your home too. Your blog is a never-ending source of inspiration for me, especially as I my man and I are also renovating our home and I love polka dots, red, pink, and pale blue. I can't wait to hear about your new discovery and to see some more pics of your lovely home.

Looks as if you all had a lovely day! Excited about your big reveal!
Ooh that sounds intriguing! We've been playing in the snow too, I love it!
a fun and wise post! oddly, snow is very much missing from the forecast on the east coast of the u.s.
enjoy!

Gelukkig is vrijdag hier (Zuid-Limburg) niets gevallen.
Oh I love the snowy pictures and the quote. We complain here in CA. too no matter what the weather is. In summer it is too hot and sticky. In fall it is too cold and dark and in winter when the song says "It never rains in California" we are usually complaining of the rain except this winter when we aren't having much.
Can't wait to see what you and Bo discovered. Don't make us wait long please.
You won't hear me complaining, for sure... I've lived in a tropical country ally life and last Friday was my first snow!!! It was super leuk!
Ooh - the suspense! Look forward to hearing all about the 'something amazing'. I don't see the point in complaining either - the contrast in our seasons is one of the things I love about living in the UK. I think the reason so many people get frustrated is because our infrastructure doesn't really seem to be prepared for it, so it's always like a big surprise and no one knows how to carry on operating as normal. Makes for some great fun and great photos though, and who doesn't like the odd enforced day off work cos you can't get there cos of the snow!?
Looks like a perfect way to spend the day. No snow here in Portsmouth UK, just grey, grey, grey!
So true! And I agree with Colleen - it's human nature.
Please keep us updated with what you and Bo saw. Am really curious!
Btw do you know what brand the red and green shoes are? Or where I could get them? Thanks!
Have a great week * C
In Cape Town we are having the opposite weather to you - a heat wave. And everyone is complaining :-) I guess it's human nature!
Ooh, you've got me very curious about whatever it is you've found :-)
Agree! It should snow in january! Too bad it's already february... ;)
The bad thing here is that simple things, like trains, suddenly come to a stand still, as if we're truly having a snowblizzard.

I just couldn't agree more and I have a lot of better things to do than complain about it with everyone I encounter! People nee to be a lot more positive like you are about this and they will have a much better life!
