It’s Santa Lucia today, the Swedish celebration of light for those of you who don’t know. It marks the beginning of the Christmas season. The tradition is that early in the morning girls in white dresses with red sashes and candles on their heads awaken the family and the elderly and bring them food.

I’ve made these dolls for my best girl, Maantje Piet.

This is what you need:

  • Wooden dolls
  • Acrylic paint colours for hair and faces
  • White cotton fabric for the dresses
  • Red ribbons for the sashes
  • Glue
  • Pipe cleaners thread (chenille) in green, white and yellow for the candles

Paint the dolls all white, this way the paint will cover better. Paint hair and faces on the dolls. Let the paint dry completely. Cut a round piece of fabric, fold it in half and cut a small opening. Fold again in half and cut another small opening. You now have cut a cross. Pull it over the doll. Stick a red ribbon on the back of the doll and fasten it by making a knot or a bow at the front of the doll. Make a crown with the chenille for the Lucia.

Happy Santa Lucia x
